This exhibit presents a selection of works from
Recent Antiquities, the latest series of paintings by Ali
Dadgar. Inspired by Pre-Islamic and Islamic Iranian
art and design, American Modernism and popular culture, Recent
Antiquities wrestles with questions of history and tradition.
The use of silkscreen in his paintings defines
Dadgar’s own distinct visual vocabulary. His paintings are
populated by historical and mythic figures from his native Iran,
and rich in cultural references that negotiate between eastern
and western aesthetic and cultural traditions.
An established Bay Area artist, Ali Dadgar was
born and raised in Iran and immigrated to the United States in
1977. He studied painting, drawing and printmaking at the California
College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California. He regularly
exhibits his visual works at local, regional and national shows.
Dadgar, who is also a performance artist, has been an active member
of the Berkeley-based Iranian theatre company DARVAG for the past
18 years and collaborates with various performance groups around
the Bay Area.
